A bare * in a parameter list marks the boundary between positional and keyword-only parameters. Everything after * must be passed by name: f(1, b=2) works, but f(1, 2) raises TypeError. This is useful for API design when you want callers to be explicit about optional parameters to prevent order-dependent bugs.
