In Python's exception hierarchy, BaseException is the root. Exception inherits from BaseException, but so do SystemExit (raised by sys.exit()), KeyboardInterrupt (Ctrl+C), and GeneratorExit. except Exception: catches all normal errors without catching those process-control exceptions. bare except: catches everything including Ctrl+C, which means users cannot kill your program. Always use except Exception: (or more specific types) unless you have a very deliberate reason to catch SystemExit.
