When the first argument to filter() is None, it uses the truthiness of each element as the test. Falsy values in Python: 0, '', None, False, [], {} - these are all removed. 1, 'hello', and 42 are truthy and survive the filter. filter(None, iterable) is a concise idiom for removing all falsy values from a sequence.
