map() returns a map object, not a list. It is a lazy iterator - no work is done until you consume it. Wrapping in list() forces evaluation, producing ['1', '2', '3']. In Python 2, map() returned a list directly. This change in Python 3 makes map() consistent with other lazy iterators like filter(), zip(), and range().
